Reed making requires lots of tools.
For shaping a reed:
- Shaper
- Knife (I use an exacto style, snap-off blade, with blade lock)
For forming a “Sydney style” tube:
- 22 gage brass wire (.6mm, 200 gram)
- Pliers (with wire cutters and curve of reed shape)
- 240 sandpaper
- Ruler
- Knife (I use an exacto style, snap-off blade, with blade lock)
- Mandrels, multiple
- Marker or pen
- Pruning sheers
- Cutting block
- Reed easel (optional)
For wrapping a reed:
- Reed thread
- Duco cement
- Scissors
- Marker or pen
- File, small and fine
- Clear nail polish
For finishing a reed:
- Reamer
- Knife (I use an exacto style, snap-off blade, with blade lock)
- Mandrel
- Plaque
- Sandpaper (320 and 240 grade)
- Dial indicator (optional)
The ONLY knife I now use is an exacto style, snap-off blade, with blade lock. After years of sharpening knives I found I spent more time sharpening than I did making reeds. With the snap-off blades I always have a sharp knife without spending any time. I find that it works great for finishing particularly because it scraps off the cane and doesn’t leave any gouges in the blade surface.
